Unit 1: Constitional History and Federalism

Parts of the Constitution

In 1781, the Articles of Confederation were ratified. Yet many Nationalists complained that it was too weak, and it was replaced by the current Constitution in 1789.

The 1789 Constitution called for a two part legislature, composed of the House of Represnetives and the Senate.

There were two major plans as well:

  • Virginia Plan- Strong, National Government organized into three branches
  • New Jersey Plan- 1 Vote to each state for Congress. More state government.

Today, to ratify the Constitution, a two third vote of both house of Congress much be reached, or a National Convention of the states must be conducted.

What is Federalism?

  •  Fedearlism is the idea of  a strong, national government in addition to smaller state governments. The framers saw the effects of strong and weak government, so federalism was the best compromise.

Federalists support a strong national government.

Anti- Federalists support a weak, national government.
